The Love for Learning

Dear Clairbourn Families,

Well, the Olympics provided me with more goosebumps this week. The story of Erin Jackson, the 500-meter speed skater, was great from so many perspectives. Erin had been an athlete for years, but hadn't been on the ice until five years ago. In the Olympic trials, Erin slipped and came in third when only the top two spots would make the team. Then her teammate Britanny Bowes, who knew Erin was a better 500-meter racer, selflessly gave up her spot for Erin. It turned out through a series of other events, Britanny got to race the 500-meter too (finishing 16th). In the end, Erin put on a race that earned her the gold medal! Amazing!

What makes her amazing is the same thing that makes good students, athletes, musicians, and artists successful. In an interview aired during the Olympic coverage, Erin's coach said she was always eager to learn.  If she didn't understand or felt like something wasn't clicking, she would ask questions until she understood or it felt right.  She worked hard and never quit. Since she started, she has only gotten better and better. I love that her hard work paid off and resulted in a gold. I love that she had the opportunity because a friend was selfless. I love that she is gracious, kind, and grateful and also fierce, tenacious, and strong.  She is a great example of heart demonstrated in sports!

What a Difference 100 Days Make!

This week, we took a moment to reflect on the work undertaken by our students and faculty as we celebrated the achievements and milestones of our 100 days of school! We saw their hard work and growth as  individuals and as a community. We love to watch our students' curiosity blossom into knowledge and actions. After only 100 days of school, their passion for learning is evident as they soar to new heights. We cannot wait to see what the next 100 days will bring!
Clairbourn Connection

Hand in Hand. Heart to Heart.
One Clairbourn!

There is no place like Clairbourn! Students were busy connecting with each other through a handprint project initiated by Student Council. Middle School students put a handprint on half of a heart and gave it to a lower school student to complete the heart shape. It signifies the love and care we all have for our school and each other. Thank you to Student Council for finding a creative way to have students connect with one another across different grade levels. Students had fun finding out who belonged to the other handprint!

Middle School Spanish:
El día de amor y amistad

In middle school Spanish classes, students listened to music from Puerto Rico and Colombia and made conversation hearts with expressions of care in Spanish. They then played musical chairs and as they landed on the conversation hearts they used gestures to interpret their meaning.

Some of the phrases were borrowed from the real messages on conversation heart candies including: plámame - ‘call me’, lanza un beso - ‘throw a kiss’, pulgar arriba - ‘thumbs up’ and estrecha la mano - ‘shake hands’. Students had a great time listening to music and reflecting on how to express their feelings for loved ones, while reviewing new vocabulary in Spanish!

Muhammed Ali, Athlete  / 1942 to 2016
During Ali's childhood, he trained under a police officer to learn boxing. His first major accomplishment was winning the 175 pound gold medal in boxing at the Rome Olympics in 1960. A memorable moment was when he defeated one of the strongest fighters in the heavyweight division, Sonny Listson. He changed his name to Muhammed Ali after accepting the teachings of Islam. He had a successful boxing career and retired in 1981. Ali committed himself to raising funds for charities around the world, including Project ALS and the Special Olympics. He was a scholar and leader with heart by paving the way for more people to start a career in boxing.

Clairbourn Math Teams

Middle School Math Teams Compete in MathCounts

Twelve middle school students represented Clairbourn in today's MathCounts competition. The competition has four levels — school, chapter, state and national. Each level is comprised of 4 rounds—Sprint, Target, Team and Countdown Round. Round one for individuals took ninety minutes, followed by the team round which was led by two Clairbourn teams with four students on each team. When we caught them after their intensive rounds, here is what they wanted to share with us: "Math is fun because the mistakes you make along the way allows thing to happen!" and "Math gives us hope because every problem has its solution!" Well done, Cougars!
