Growth Mindset Inspiration
Dear Clairbourn Families,
I don't know about you, but I have been enjoying the Winter Olympics. I love the competitions, learning about new sports (curling and big air were new to me), and hearing the individual back stories on the athletes. The common thread in each story is having to overcome some major adversity. Each of the athletes has had to deal with a challenge, struggle, set back, or major tragedy at some point in their experience. They all credit their parents for helping them as a support while they worked through the challenge. They also credit having to work through the difficulties as giving them the strength, stamina,
resilience, and perseverance that makes them such successful athletes.
As much as it is difficult to see a child struggle with a challenge, think of the strength they are building as they persist. Think of how little strength and resilience they build when the adult swoops in and rescues them. Fixing the problem for them not only takes away their opportunity to grow through struggle, it also can send the message that the adult doesn't think the child is capable of handling the challenge. The impact of the adult cheering them on through the challenge is immeasurable.
I also love watching the athletes breaking barriers and limitations. What was once thought impossible is now a signature move for them. It is the growth mindset which allows that kind of progress. When someone told the athlete that a move was impossible, they instead thought, "It hasn't been done yet!" Then they put in the effort, endured many failures, and eventually stomped the switch double cork 1080. Amazing to watch what happens when they change "I can't" to "I haven't yet" and combine the growth mindset with the work to grow!
Many of these athletes are great examples and sources for inspiration for our students (and for me too!).

Celebrating Olympics
Clairbourn Olympics and Cougar Spirit
Winter Olympics spirit is going around the campus! Middle schoolers discussed how effortless the skaters look on the ice. Lower school students shared what their favorite winter sport is and kept up with the medal count. Our preschoolers started Clairbourn Olympics this week with the "lighting of the torch." Their Olympic project will end in two weeks and they will explore all the summer and winter sports. Our little Cougars are very excited. Let's check out what they did this week!

Student Council
Celebrating Black History Month in February
Fredrick Douglass, Reformer / 1818 to 1895
The list of Frederick Douglass's accomplishments is astonishing—respected orator, famous writer, abolitionist, civil rights leader, presidential consultant. He was a former slave with no formal education. After escaping from slavery, he decided to join the abolition movement. He also worked hard for women’s civil rights. He married Anna Murray whom he helped to escape from slavery. He was a scholar and leader with heart!
Michael Jordan, Athlete / 1963 to present
Michael was born in Brooklyn. He attended the University of North Carolina. He impacted America and the world by spreading his passion and commitment to basketball. People were inspired and motivated by his athletic strength and ability. He led his team to six NBA championships. Off the court, Michael is a man with a big heart which he demonstrates by giving back to the community and donating to racial and social-justice groups. Michael Jordan is truly a leader with heart.

Music In The Afternoon
Sharing The Gift of Music
We are proud of our music program at Clairbourn. From the middle school ensemble in the late morning to band rehearsals in the afternoon, students play with such joy and constantly fill the campus with their music. Last quarter, our middle school ensemble students worked hard on various holiday pieces and learned how to listen to each other as a group and play harmoniously. Students wanted to share with the community Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring by J.S. Bach. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do! |
Clairbourn Insights
Book Presentation in First Grade
Public speaking starts young at Clairbourn. Students not only present for Morning Assembly but they demonstrate their skills daily in their classrooms. Last week, first graders shared their favorite book with their classmates. Each student wrote a review, illustrated artwork for the book, made a presentation in front of the whole class, and answered questions from their peers. What a great experience!

Kindergarten Post Office
Learning Through Role Play
Kindergarten Blue and Gold Dragonfly Post Office, modeled after the actual Postal Service, opened this week! Students practiced math through counting as a cashier and exercised their number recognition through sorting. They collaborated with each other while developing their motor skills and service learning experience. Kindergarteners made Valentine's Day mail for their classmates. Our postal workers processed an average of 45 pieces of mail each day! The post office will continue until tomorrow.
