Head of School Update

Vaccinations and Students on Campus

Dear Clairbourn Families,

As we ended our time in December, we were looking forward to bringing some of our students back on campus in January.

Our latest communications from the LA County Department of Public Health and the Pasadena Department of Public Health are asking us to protect the community by not bringing students back until February at the earliest.

They are asking that we support our overwhelmed hospital system by asking people to stay home until the ICU capacity is at 15% or more and the case rate drops to 28 or better. Right now the ICU capacity in our area is at 0%, so we are following their request.

We continue to closely monitor the data and will start to bring students in K-2 back to campus when they determine it is safe. When we reach that time, we will have grade-level meetings to discuss specific procedures everyone will be asked to follow.

Vaccines are being distributed to front line workers. Our own nurse, Nick Jubilado, was vaccinated yesterday as part of the 1a phase of distribution.

In the next few weeks all school personnel will be eligible to participate in the vaccinations as part of the 1b phase of distribution. The county is working on the logistics and timing. More information about this comes out each day and seems to be moving quickly.

The 3rd quarter is now underway and our students are doing well. We had an impressive number of students in the middle school earn academic honors for the 2nd quarter and we are so proud of their efforts and achievements. Certificates are being mailed home to recognize these students! Congratulations to our Scholars and Leaders with Heart!

Staying Healthy:

Feeling anxious or trapped? Harvard Business Review shared some great ideas on how to break free from these unhelpful thought patterns like:

"If you find yourself saying, “I feel stuck,” “I don’t know what to do,” or “There’s no way out,” ask yourself, “If a colleague came to me with my predicament, what would I tell them?” This pause allows you to become more objective and loosen the thinking trap that has you in its hold."

Why The World's Richest Men Wash  Their Own Dishes

If your children complain about chores, they can take a tip from Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos. As reported by cnbc.com, both billionaires make it a point to wash their own dishes. Multiple independent studies have found that doing the dishes can reduce stress and boost creativity.

According to one study, students who were primed to be mindful while washing dishes (i.e. focus on breathing and the touch, smell and feel of the task) saw a decrease in their stress levels and a boost in inspiration. Concentrating on the feeling of the warm water or the smell of the soap stimulated the brain."

Learn Leadership from the Ladies!

According to new research from multiple studies, women leaders are rated higher for their performance in times of crisis. Why?

"Female leaders expressed more awareness of fears that followers might be feeling, concern for well-being, and confidence in their plans.

...qualities like charm and confidence that help people rise to leadership are not necessarily the same ones that help them excel once they're on top, where empathy, humility, and self-knowledge are key. Male leaders might take a lesson in the qualities most valued by employees in difficult times."

Bonus Tip: Introverts are also shown to overperform as leaders during a crisis.
