How We Can Help to Heal the Nation

Dear Clairbourn Families,

I am sure we all saw the events at the nation’s capital yesterday. For many it probably elicited a very strong response. I am sure the feelings generated by vary depending on many factors unique to each individual.

This morning I talked to the students about how grateful I am for our Code of Ethics and how it guides us to form a strong, powerful, and harmonious community. I am struck by the example set by our youngest students about how to behave.

Even our youngest students have no problem learning how to live the values in our Code of Ethics. Each value singularly is important, but when used together, the results are amazing.

We tell the students it is their RESPONSIBILITY to do what is right and stand up for what is right. SPIRITUALITY is that inner voice that tells us what is the right, good, and helpful thing to stand for. HONESTY tells us what we need to say as well as what we should not say. RESPECT tells us how we should say it and how we stand up for that which is right. CITIZENSHIP is the idea that all of these things work together to make the community improve, grow, and progress.

When the values work together, we end up with a community like Clairbourn where we can share our ideas, learn from each other, support each other’s growth, and challenge ideas that hold us back. We don’t have to agree on politics, policies, or even favorite sports teams for this to work. We only have to agree on the values.

In our work at Clairbourn to "Create Scholars and Leaders with Heart," each staff member, parent, and child has a role to play in helping to realign the spirit and behaviors of the nation by committing to these values and by putting them into practice in our school day and relationships.

We can commit to being guided by a spirit of love and cooperation in everything we do. In this small, but powerful way, we can become an inspiration for others and part of the answer for healing the nation.

1st-Grader Nalia J.'s Musical Magic!

Nilia J., loves music and started playing the piano 10 months ago. In the last three months, she accelerated her skill level and learned eight pieces. She even taught herself to play Beethoven’s "Ode To Joy" within 30 minutes and composed an original piece which she named, "Nilia's Symphony."

Like many young children, Nilia wanted to share her music pieces, but performing live seemed super scary. Despite her fears, she dazzled her relatives in December with a show called, "Nilia's Virtual Christmas Symphony at the Jubilado Concert Hall."

The atmosphere her parents created to help her feel supported included personalized concert tickets, a music program, glow-in-the-dark event favors, a theatre concession stand with refreshments, costume changes, roses for throwing on "stage," and a presentation bouquet for the end of the show. This special environment helped Nilia to feel comfortable playing her pieces as well as hosting the sing-along portion and narrating the show. Way to go, Nilia!

Staying Healthy:

Beat anxiety with the 5,4,3,2,1 countdown:

To experience calm, just sit quietly and begin to notice the following things:

-5 things you can see
-4 things you can touch
-3 things you can hear
-2 things you can smell
-1 thing you can taste

"This exercise helps you shift your focus to your surroundings in the present moment and away from what is causing you to feel anxious. It can help interrupt unhealthy thought patterns."

Thoughts on Heart:

Using our hearts and connecting to others with love is an urgent concern for everyone.

KidNation founder Chris “Ludacris” Bridges is using song and video to educate children about what matters most. Bridges says, “...tell your kids how important it is to lead with love. Somewhere along the way, we sometimes forget that.”

“There’s too much division in the world,” added Co-Founder, Sandy Lal. “Kids see past our differences. They know how to get along, so let’s take a lesson from them.”
